This time I decided to attempt to make a skirt using no pattern at all, but simply by tracing a skirt that I wanted to replicate. I chose a skirt from Anthropologie (big surprise, right?) that I absolutely fell in love with. But, what I didn’t love was the price! It was originally $118, on sale for $60. But, I took a look at the construction of the skirt and knew that it would be so simple to make! I just can’t justify paying that much money for something I can make for so much cheaper! So, without much tado, I will first show you the skirt I copied:
Like I said, this is NOT the one I made. Check out that price tag
Ouch.
But, I loved the concept, with the eyelet lace around the bottom 8 or so inches. And it fit perfectly, which is something I rarely find in a skirt. So, I set off the find this fabric. This feat turned out impossible! I had no idea it would be so hard to find a simple blue thin pinstripe. So, finally after much hunting, I decided to go with yellow. It seemed very summery and I thought the lightness of the yellow would look adorable with the white eyelet trim. Now to find the trim! If the pinstripe was impossible, this was insurmountable! It was just not going to happen. So, with the advice of a sewing friend and some helpful saleswomen at my local fabric store, I decided to instead find a fabric I liked and then trim it into the shape I wanted and applique it to the bottom part of the skirt.
I ended up finding an eyelet lace at Nancy’s Sewing Basket on Queen Anne. Next I cut around the flowers so they would form a scalloped edge, then I basically serged it (zig-zag stitch on my sewing machine) to a white cotton fabric, so it wouldn’t be see through. (Sorry to those non-sewers, much of this will not make sense). After that I cut around the two layers of fabric (eyelet and white cotton which are now sewn together) and hand-stitched this around the bottom part of the skirt. Add a simple zipper and that was it! Here’s the result:
I am so happy with the way it turned out! It is the perfect summer skirt.
Oh, we go to California in 10 days to visit my sister/brother-in-law and their adorable perfect baby, Madelyn! AND, my mom is coming TOMORROW for a week! I am so excited!
I made a jersey tshirt the other night that I will post later. Bye for now!
